This UK-first Road Safety project is a strategic partnership between VivaCity, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), and West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), where 32 existing VivaCity sensors across local West Midlands authorities have been upgraded to include VivaCity’s Near Miss feature, with an aim to improve road safety and help the road safety industry embrace better quality data that is aligned to the Safe System Approach and Vision Zero. The March 2024 focus group session was hosted at the Transport for West Midlands regional office with TfWM, Dudley City Council, Arup, Walsall City Council and VivaCity in attendance. From the outset, this is a combined, collaborative project between suppliers, regional and local authorities, consultancies and many others because there is value at both a regional and a hyper local level to leveraging high quality road safety data.
The session revolved around the theme “Making Smarter Road Safety Decisions,” addressing challenges that included site selection, safety data analysis, countermeasures, and stakeholder engagement. The teams had a chance to present back interesting safety insights to the wider audience, share best practice in analysing sites, and use the forum to discuss how data can inform potential interventions and make smarter safety decisions.
As 2024 continues, VivaCity will continue to closely collaborate with TFWM, producing case studies and presenting at additional focus groups and safety events, including Road Safety GB in November. Make sure to stay in touch by signing up to our newsletter.
