Product & Technology

What data can you provide?

Viva can provide historic, real-time and predictive data on the road network, including fully classified counts, speed, journey time and path analysis, all from the same sensor. You can read more about our sensor data here.

How does the technology work?

We use the latest artificial intelligence techniques in order to detect and classify road users. Each sensor contains a local ‘edge’ processor, which takes video from the in-built camera and runs machine learning algorithms to extract classification and location data, for example counts of vehicles along a road, paths of cyclists across a road, or numbers of passengers on a crowded platform. Each frame of video under normal operation is deleted immediately after processing, with only anonymous data being extracted, stored and transmitted.

You can read more detail about our technology here  and our privacy-by-design approach.

How does it identify different types of vehicles?

We train our systems to identify different vehicles by providing them with hundreds of thousands of images, containing different vehicle types. Much like a child, they use these examples to learn the features of different vehicles, such as vans having no back windows and sometimes (but not always) writing on the sides; that bicycles are thinner and more transparent than motorbikes; and that vehicles with two rows of windows are probably buses. Combining hundreds or thousands of features together, they can identify each type of vehicle, just like a human. You can read more about our video analytics here.

What are 'Smart Junctions'?

Our Smart Junctions are a first-of-its-kind AI signal control system. Our sensors provide anonymous real-time data feeds on vehicle counts, classifications, speeds, and journey times, along with information on queue build-up. These give machine learning algorithms a broad understanding of the current situation, and based on precise, current vehicle positions, are able to adapt quickly to changing traffic conditions and efficiently implement traffic network management strategies at both local and city-wide scales. You can read more about our Smart Junctions here.

How can I access the data?

We have a web dashboard which allows you to analyse and interrogate live and historic data for each sensor. You can also quickly and easily download the data in a variety of formats. In addition, we provide automated access to our data through modern, industry-standard JSON APIs. This allows developers and systems integrators to work with our data quickly and easily.

Please contact us for more information or a Dashboard demonstration.

Technology is moving quickly. How do you keep your systems up to date?

Every sensor can be remotely updated quickly and easily. Given that artificial intelligence algorithms get better and better with more data, we update most of our sensors on a regular basis to ensure that everyone is using the latest and greatest technology available. You can read more about our technology here.

How expensive is it?

We are proud to be bringing new technology to road transport, and want to ensure that this is available as widely as possible. With several different pricing options according to project requirements, we are confident of delivering value-for-money whatever the budget and requirements. Please contact us to discuss your project needs in more detail.

Sensor Installation

How are your sensors installed?

All our sensors need is a lamp post or similar structure which can take the weight of our sensors (equivalent to a couple of pigeons), and a power supply.

How are your sensors powered?

Our sensors can be powered from any local AC or DC source.

As a producer of industrial batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, we (Viva) produce lithium-ion batteries and are obliged to take back, free of charge, waste industrial batteries supplied to an end user for treatment and recycling.

If any of our customers require us to take back waste batteries, they should email us at contact@vivacitylabs.com – we will agree the necessary arrangements for the return, proper treatment and recycling of the waste industrial batteries.

Ethics and Privacy

Should I be worried about my privacy?

Not at all. Privacy is at the heart of everything we do and we have designed our solutions from the ground up to guarantee the privacy of every citizen. Our sensors are designed to provide accurate data on the usage statistics of road environments in a completely anonymous way. The system was developed using data protection-by-design principles and is fully compliant with GDPR. Our sensors do not collect personal data, and none of our clients can use our technologies to gather any kind of personal data or for enforcement purposes, ever.

You can read more about our robust data privacy approach here.

Is the system GDPR compliant?

Yes, absolutely. We have tested every element of our system under GDPR principles, and our lawyers are confident that we go “above and beyond” what is required by GDPR. Read more about our privacy-by-design approach here.
