- Sensors will gather data pre- and post-implementation at locations where 20mph limits are being introduced in Phase 1 of the Nationwide project, as well as control sites that have not had speed restrictions imposed
In March 2019 the Welsh Government announced plans for a new national default speed limit of 20mph to be implemented in residential areas across the country by 2023. Phase 1 of this process is the introduction of 20mph limits in eight trial areas.
Viva are proud to be supporting this first-of-a-kind initiative by collaborating with the Welsh Government, who are using our cutting-edge AI technology to monitor and analyse the impact of reducing speed limits on pedestrian footfall and vehicle volumes, and pedestrian/vehicle interactions.
Results from the Phase 1 introduction will provide invaluable insights that will inform the roll-out of 20mph speed limits across Wales. We are delighted to be involved in this ground-breaking research, with the application of our technology supporting strategic speed limit reduction and significantly influencing road safety policy in Wales.
Focus on Yield Rates
This is an exciting, first-of-its-kind initiative, where gathering data insights on yielding behaviors is achieved through bespoke application of our ground-breaking Near Miss capability.
With 3D pose detection, Near Miss enables the accurate analysis of post-encroachment time and – for the first time – makes it possible to analyse vehicle behaviors in response to pedestrian presence at crossings, and provide data-backed evidence of pedestrian safety and Highway Code compliance.
By comparing data from crossings within 20mph and 30mph zones, it’s possible to determine the role that speed plays in vehicle yield rates at crossings.
In the case of a zebra-crossing, near miss datasets will provide insights into vehicle behaviors when a pedestrian arrives at the side of the crossing, including if cars slow down and stop, slow down but continue, don’t adjust their speed, or speed up to cross before the pedestrian does.

Accurate data and insights for traffic monitoring
Collecting the data and interpreting these insights are possible using Viva’s computer vision traffic monitoring sensors.
